vitaLAX by Vita Columbia is a saline laxative composed of magnesium citrate and vitaTRACE® Trace Mineral Complex that produces rapid relief of constipation symptoms.

vitaLAX functions as a nonabsorbable salt that via an osmotic effect causes the rapid secretion of water into the distal small intestine and colon leading to a high volume of liquid stool. This allows for prompt bowel evacuation within 1-3 hours of intake and relief of constipation symptoms.

vitaLAX is minimally absorbed and therefore does not have systemic effects. It is suitable for those on a low-fiber diet.

Bulk-forming laxatives such as psyllium husk are commonly used agents used to treat constipation in the general population by increasing stool bulk due to their high fiber content. However, in many people these products can worsen constipation symptoms. Furthermore, in individuals with Short Gut Syndrome (patients having undergone an colectomy, ileo-rectal / ileo-anal anastomosis surgery) bulk-forming laxatives can contribute to obstructive complications and therefore should be avoided.
